Tom Robinson is innocent;he did not rape Mayella Ewell. We can infer this from Mayella’s testimony. At first, she said, “ he chunked me down on the floor,an’ chocked me’n took advantage of me” (180). This sounds very convincing, but ,as Atticus started interrogating her, she started to change her testimony. When he asked her if she remembers if Tom hit her in the face. She says, “ No, I don’t recollect if he hit me”(185). After saying this, she immediately tries to take by saying, “ I mean yes I do, he hit me”(185). With this, we can tell that Mayella isn’t telling the truth and is probably being forced to say what she said happened. Moreover, a very important detail about Tom Robinson wasn’t revealed until Atticus asked him to stand up. It
