Substance abuse is shown as a motif in There There. This is to highlight the hardship the characters go through, to help the reader understand more deliberately why the characters are going through struggles. One motif that keeps coming up throughout the book is substance abuse. The characters that have connections to substance abuse in their story are always the ones that have dark pasts and are still trying to heal from it. This factor emphasizes how these symbols shape one's identity and how they move on from one's past. When characters are introduced in this novel, the underlying factor that always pops up is that they all endure hardships. Substance abuse is a factor that highlights this and makes it evident by explaining that the reason or reasons they struggle is that of events that relate to substance abuse.
