Katniss revels three important relationships during the novel, which proved to have been a crucial factor in her triumph. Her relationship with Gale provides her with support, as they are both providers for their families. This strength she must show her family means that Gale is the only one she can look towards for comfort. “In the woods waits the only person with whom I can be myself. Gale.” Peeta, fellow tribute, becomes an invaluable friend and ally during the chaos of the Hunger Games. His unconditional love for Katniss leads him to risk his life for her just as Robyn risked her life for Lee. Katniss also develops a close friendship with Rue, a younger tribute in the Games, who reminds her of her sister. They form a friendship that provides Katniss with comfort she had been missing while in the Games. “I realize, for the first time, how very lonely I’ve been in the arena. How comforting the presence of another human being can be.” (pg. 252) Katniss’ love for her family is the reason Katniss volunteered for The Hunger Games; it is also what keeps her going through the dangers of the arena and her battles against other tributes.
