In the past recent years the LGBT community has grown and become more accepted by society rather than frowned down upon. Considering the communities growth changes were done within the law to help ensure that they received the equality that they people of the United States deserve. For example over the course of six-years gay marriage has been legalized, president obama signed several laws that protected discrimination of a person's sexual orientation/gender from the workforce, military and healthcare. Even with all the great changes members of the LGBT community still experience discrimination and have issues that need to be resolved. A main problem that is in the news today is what bathrooms should transgender people be able to use? Eight-year-old Marilyn who was born a boy now identifies as a girl, marilyn claims she has several supportive friends and enjoys school. This changed when the school would not allow her to use the girls bathroom. Forcing her to use the boys bathroom caused her to be humiliated and bullied to the point she had to resort to homeschooling. In the interview marilyn said “I’m just like any other girl. I was assigned male at birth, but that’s not who I am. I’m not a boy”. If the school would have let Marilyn use the girls bathroom should would most likely still be in public school and could be an inspiration to other transgender children. Marilyn's supportive friend group and normal school life was taken away from her all because of what bathroom she was able to use. This is happening to transgender children all throughout the United States putting an extra spotlight on them rather than treating them as if they were not
