Reflection Journal Two Ethics in Nursing Flashback to week two of my first semester of nursing school: ethics were the hot seat on the table. Being a nurse means there are situations that are bound to occur that may be tricky or not something that we can prepare for with a typical simulation or clinical. In this assignment, we tackle one of the most complex and important topics that guides how we practice nursing. There are many examples of this, from black women having the highest maternal mortality rate in the United States to the treatment of black men in the Tuskegee syphilis study. In an article called, “The Tuskegee Syphilis Study and Its Implications for the 21st Century” written by Carol A. Heintzelman shares how a big factor in the result of the deadliness and unethicalness of the Tuskegee syphilis study taking place or going on so long was due to this bias. She says “Third, beliefs within the medical profession about the nature of African Americans, sexual behavior, and disease clouded the study.
