In Twelfth Night or What you Will by William Shakespeare, Viola faces many problems of masking her identity as a male figure from the critical lens of gender theory. The problem began when Viola arrived at the unfamiliar shores of Illyria after a shipwreck. After being saved by the captain, she questions whether her twin brother, Sebastian survived or not from the storm. “My brother, he is in Elysium” (Shakespeare). This text demonstrates that after being separated by her brother she feels vulnerable that she doesn’t have a strong male figure to protect her and has to figure out a way to survive.
