Diabetes mellitus is a medical disease in which the human body does not make enough insulin or does not use it properly. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas, an organ that is located behind the stomach. The human body needs insulin to help turn food one consumes into energy. Energy is very crucial for the body to function properly. If there is not enough insulin, the cells in the body cannot use the sugar (or glucose) in the blood to make energy; therefore the glucose stays in the bloodstream. This can lead to high glucose levels. Over time and if left untreated, high blood glucose levels in the body can cause serious damage to a person’s vision, kidneys, nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Detection and diagnosis confirmation usually happens during a routine exam or blood tests. On the other hand, there are some common symptoms of Type 2 diabetes that undiagnosed people can experience that may raise their concerns such as polyuria. Urination is how the body can eliminate waste. Experiencing constant urination can be a sign that your body is trying to flush out excessive amount of glucose. High glucose levels can also increase one’s thirst or polydipsia as a result of dehydration. Feeling fatigue more than usual throughout the day can be a way the body is telling you the necessary amount of glucose are not getting to the body cells. Blurred vision and slower-healing infections are also possible indications of diabetes mellitus. Neuropathy is a condition in which affects the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord called peripheral nerves. Peripheral nerves are divided into three types: motor (controls voluntary movement), sensory (allows one to feel and touch), and autonomic (control involuntary activity).
