Network layer firewalls, also called a packet filter, is a low level TCP/IP protocol stack, not allowing packets to pass the firewall but they must match an established rule set. They have two levels of protection like a ‘Stateful’ firewalls check each packet of see if they match a rule set, source and destination IP address, UDP or TCP ports. If a packet does not match it is rejected by the firewall. This process reduces the bandwidth of a network. Stateless firewalls is faster due to it filters that require less time to filter, but they cannot more complex decisions with communications between hosts.
Application-layer firewalls work on the application level of the TCP/IP stack, and may intercept all packets traveling to/or from an application blocking other packets. After inspecting all packets for improper content, firewalls can restrict or prevent the spread of networked computer worms and Trojans. Also, application firewalls determine a process should accepted on any given connection and screen packets by hooking into socket calls to filter the connections between the application layer and the lower layers of the OSI model. Application firewalls that hook into socket calls are also referred to as socket filters.
A proxy server may act as a firewall by responding to input packets in the manner of an application, and while blocking other packets a proxy act as gateway from one network to another for a network application. This will work as a function of a proxy on behalf of the user.
