1) Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Ulysses S. Grant.
2) Central Idea: Ulysses S. Grant was in the Army, he also ran to become President of the United States.
3) Main Points:
1) Ulysses S. Grant was a General in the Union Army and worked his way up in the ranks.
2) Ulysses S. Grant ran for President of the U.S. and won.
3) Ulysses S. Grant was in the Civil War.

1. Introduction
Capture the Audience’s Attention:
Did you know Ulysses S. Grant grow up in Georgetown, Ohio, but didn’t go into the family business, instead he worked at home doing chores, farm work and handling horses.
Introduction the Topic:
Ulysses S. Grant is an interesting person, so is he’s back round. To understand Ulysses S. Grants back round you will have to consider he’s early childhood, his army back round and his Presidents back round. I have had an interest in Ulysses S. Grant since I learned about the Civil War.
Establish Importance/ Preview the message:
Think of honor, bravery, courage when you’re thinking of Ulysses S. Grant. He has military back round and worked his way to the top rank which is being a General in the Union Army. He was President of the United States not once but twice. I wish I had the pleasure of meeting Ulysses S. Grant.

A.) Statement of Key Idea:
1.) Ulysses S. Grant was grow up in Georgetown, Ohio.
2.) Ulysses didn’t work in the family business, instead he work at home doing chores, farm work and handling horses.
3.) Ulysses father Jesses Root Grant made an appointment for Ulysses to go to West Point, New York.
4.) When Grant graduated in 1843, he was ranked 21st out of 39 in his class.
5.) After graduation Grant was assigned as a brevet second Lieutenant to the 4th U.S. Infantry, stationed St. Louis, Missouri, where he meet and married Julia Boggs Dent. His roommate’s sister from West Point.
6.) Mexican War (1846-1848) Grant showed fighting and leadership under General Zachary Taylor, then was transferred to General Winfield Scotts and became 1st lieutenant and then captain.
Transitional Sentence:
Along with Grants military back round, he was in the U.S. Civil War and later was commander of the Union Army.
B.) Statement of key Idea:
1.) The Civil War broke out in 1861. Grant helped train newer troops.
2.) Grant helped win the first major Union victory in February, 16 when fort Donelson, Cumberland River in Tennessee surrendered with about 15,000 troops.
