In order to move on and provide a better future for the new generations, we must abolish slavery and treat everyone equally, no matter their race. The slaves want to escape because they are treated terribly in the plantations. PBS.org mentions that the harsh treatment included “...unsanitary conditions, inadequate nutrition and unrelenting hard labor made slaves highly susceptible to disease. Illnesses [are]generally not treated adequately, and slaves [are]often forced to work even when sick.” Slaves want to leave their plantations and live their lives as free human beings, just like other people in the United States. It is morally wrong to have slaves working on a plantation for hours every day and controlling their lives. As slaves start to escape and start their journey North, they experience “a life of hardship, with little food, infrequent access to shelter or medical care, and the constant threat of local sheriffs, slave catchers or civilian lynch mobs.” (PBS.org). This proves that slaves are constantly facing hardships as they try to escape from the South. It is important to abolish slavery because America can become the greatest country if we get rid of slavery.
