The Criminal justice system in the United States works to maintain the safety and welfare of the citizens of this country. By ensuring law and order, the criminal justice system controls and prevents crime that would harbor danger to the millions of people who inhabit this great country. Without the police, who are the front line in controlling crime; the courts, which sentence those who commit crimes; and correction, which help those who have committed crimes; this country would be in complete chaos. However, the system is very complex, and at many times controversial. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, which details data of many crimes in the entire nation over many years, violent crimes which include murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, had increased in the country at a rate of 5.3% in 2016. However, they have linked the white man to two shooting deaths of black men in the area named Bruce Cofield and Donald Smart , and the crimes are said to have been racially motivated due to the growing tensions between police and blacks after white police officers shot a black man to death outside a convenience store. However, the suspect has not been formally charged, or formally accused with the crime in court with the murder yet. “The suspect, Kenneth Gleason, was being held on drug charges. The crimes, murder, were of mala in se, which means that the crimes were wrong by nature. They were also visible crimes, which are any crimes such as crimes against humanity, property, or public order.
