As a support worker, you may come across individuals with a wide range of conditions and disabilities, these individuals may even have multiple conditions. This is where they may have multiple diagnoses which are ongoing and these conditions can often be linked. For example, one person I work with has the diagnosis of Kleefstra syndrome and this can often be linked to hearing loss, heart conditions and bowel issues which this person has most of plus other diagnoses. 1.1. When an individual has multiple disabilities they can impact on each other; for example, an individual may have the diagnosis of autism and epilepsy; however, with autism they may struggle to understand that epilepsy can be …show more content…
They look at the overall picture of medication, conditions and well being of this individual. 2.1. There may be resources to support the individual such as electronic communication aids, picture signs and clear routine boards. Another individual I work with has behavioural support and has techniques such as a red card when you need to stop what you are doing and take this person to their safe space for a chat before any behaviours are displayed or to do breathing techniques. 2.2. When you get to know the individuals that you are working with, you will learn about what is important to them and what informal networks can provide support for them. This can be their family, friendship groups, clubs or a church / religious group. These help the individual to feel that they are not alone and to connect with likeminded people with similar interests. 2.3. I feel that in my role I can help support the individuals that I work with by listening to their needs, following their body language and working in a person centred way to plan their wishes for a fulfilling and enriched life.
