Cause

An inspiration that motivated Upton Sinclair to write The Jungle was the because of the book Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher. He wanted a book similar to Tom’s Cabin but instead of the cruel events taking place during the Civil war time period, he wanted to modernize it, calling it the “ Tom’s Cabin of Chicago”. Upton Sinclair wanted to write a book aimed at his audience’s heart about the situations that most immigrants are faced with while working in meat or any other food industries. But instead, it got to the reader’s stomachs. The Jungle showed a vivid yet powerful message about the importance of unsanitary Chicago stockyards. Sinclair was also rewarded with 20th’s century’s early Muckraker, a writer that has exposed the corruption in business and politics. His book assisted with the Federal Meat Inspection Act which ensures the meat industry must be proceeded with sanitary conditions. The meat and meat products must be clean in order for their industry to be continuing with business. Because of his book, it has led to reforms such as the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug act of 1906 which made sanitations a top priority to our meat products and food therefore of that we can be ensured that our chances to eat cleaner, healthier meals will be increased. And our changes of abdominal pain, constipations, diarrhea and vomiting will be decreased, along with less hospital patients. Upton Sinclair partly achieved his goal which was for people to acknowledge the hardships of immigrants but the main focus was on sanitations on food. Unfortunately not much was done to help the immigrants that have a similar situation in the story, Sinclair wanted to companies to change their ways and make life better for immigrants like with the book Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and despite unable to fully achieve his goal he was still able to help this society by contributing his knowledge about the negative point of view we don’t see in meat
