Throughout this assignment I will discuss how health and social care workers should not advocate the use of punishment as a response to a person with challenging behaviour. I will explain challenging behaviour in more depth and how it affects a person with the disability, autism. Autism is a multifaceted development disorder which appears throughout the first three years, however, it can be diagnosed much later in life. It can have an effect on the brain’s normal development of communication and social skills. Autism is a physical condition connected to abnormal biology and chemistry within the brain. The usual characteristics of this condition consist of impaired social interactions, reduced verbal, nonverbal communication and recurring patterns of behaviour (Ebert, 2014). Even though some children with autism are nonverbal it doesn’t suggest that they can't communicate. Punishments and rewards are ways that assist children’s understanding of actions that are acceptable and which are not. Parents utilize punishments to stop their children from behaving badly (Gilgun J, 2011,). Making use of rewards will strengthen the good behaviours they want to promote. Children require discipline to discover how to function within society. If the child breaks a rule, it's crucial to talk securely to them, about the mistakes they have made. Rewarding a child is a positive way to teach a child the difference between right and wrong. It’s important to give them support through language and offering a gift to demonstrate your approval. An example of a reward can be letting the child stay up late on a Saturday night.
