The novel “Nineteen Eighty Four” written by George Orwell, and the film “V for Vendetta” directed by James McTeigue, both consist of societies run by a totalitarian government. Although, the stories differ for various reasons, the protagonists in both the novel and the film share a similar goal; to take down the government. However, the protagonist, V, from “V for Vendetta” happens to be a better hero to combat a totalitarian government compared to the protagonist, Winston Smith, in “Nineteen Eighty Four”, due to the fact that he is direct, fearless, and becomes a leader.

Winston began to rebel in secret, cautious with every move he made. Constantly aware that he was frequently being watched, heard and monitored to ensure that he was not a Thought Criminal. When Winston first met Julia, he wants to smash her skull in because the temptation of sleeping with her was to strong. However once he got to know her, he fell in love. Not only with her, but her enjoyment of sleeping with multiple Party members. By having intercourse with Julia, Winston was rebelling. She constantly gave him strict instructions for each rendezvous, “Don’t come to me until you see me among a lot of people. And don’t look at me. Just keep somewhere near me.” (119). Julia made sure that no one would see them, causing Winston to take an indirect approach on rebelling. Whereas, V let every resident in the city aware that he was taking a stand. Despite the controls of media within a totalitarian government, V was able to hack into the government systems to broadcast his plan throughout the town square. Alerting the government, citizens, and anyone within the city. V was not afraid of the government, and even went to some Members of Parliaments houses to kill them.
