The power of an entire community that have a common mindset is much greater than that of one person. This concept is the backbone in both the book, 1984 by George Orwell, and the movie, V for Vendetta. Both have governments that are very controlling and human reactions to it are portrayed in different ways. “BIG BROTHER IS WACHING YOU.” (1984 2). That line is used in 1984 to show no matter what you did or where you went, you had no freedom of your own and that the government was always watching. Both story lines describe how humans are being oppressed by a totalitarian or very controlling government system. The purpose of 1984 is to show how much power the government has as well as how afraid the people are of the government. The purpose of V for Vendetta is to show action brought on the government. Both the book and the movie show what can happen if a government does whatever it wants to do. They also show the way people as a whole react in certain situations and how some individuals react differently under those same situations. A common question from both the book and the movie is, “Can this ever happen to me?” Without people stepping up and fighting back on the government when the government is oppressive, it may very well happen to all of us. While they both have similar goals in mind, only V is successful in his attempt. While V dies in Evey’s arms, and not being able to see Noresefire be overthrown, his work was enough to break through the governments thick walls. Both characters believe in having freedom and believe that freedom is worth fighting for. Both characters were successful in their own way because they show everyone that ideas like freedom and relationships and a quality of life are worth protecting and fighting for even if the enemy is your own
