Before Vans, there was Nike. Nike was founded in 1964. It was founded by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. They came up with the idea because Mr. Knight was a mid-distance runner, looking for better shoes; Mr. Bowerman was a man interested in making a living without having to give up his love for athletics. Shortly after, in 1964, it was founded under the name of Blue Ribbon Sports. It also was a distributor for the Japanese shoemaker, Onitsuka Tiger. They got the name Nike from the Greek Goddess.
