Verizon's Acquisition of Yahoo! Promises to Extend Advertising Options for Hospitality
Predictions are complex--just consider the whole Brexit situation and how anticipation of helicopter money from Japan and other stimulus money from worldwide communities has confounded traditional thinking in the investment markets. However, I'm happy to report that Verizon's acquisition of Yahoo! for $4.83 billion in cash fits precisely in the middle range of sale prices and potential buyers that I mentioned in an earlier post. The hospitality industry can expect some expanding options and a real competitor to Google's near-monopoly of the search industry. Anyone paying attention will now note that Google ad displays now favour its paid advertisers more prominently due to Google's changes. I predict that Verizon will make some inroads and that many hospitality advertisers will find attractive alternatives in the new search engine force that combines Verizon's knowledge base with Yahoo!'s formidable client base and popular destinations features. AOL contributes a revamped advertising facility for mobile advertising, but the combined resources will still fall somewhat short of what Google and Facebook have built over time. However, Yahoo! Brings a billion daily users, great name recognition and superior consumer features like Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports and Tumblr. I suspect that Internet changes will undergo a paradigm change within 18 months of January 2017, and hospitality companies, in particular, should benefit enormously with new advertising products, better targeting capabilities, creative features like virtual room tours, lower prices per targeted customer and better conversion rates.
