The book ‘Divergent’, by Veronica Roth is an adventurous thrilling novel. It is set in the future following the story of Beatrice Prior and the choices she is faced with, in the world that is now divided into factions. Beatrice must pick a faction, which will determine the rest of her life. I will be exploring the characters between the book and movie and how they differ with one another through the use of many literary techniques illustrated by the author.

In the book Four is eighteen making him only two years older than Tris. The book reveals Tris and Four to be concerned by the two year gap already, “I’ve never been involved with someone before, and…you’re older.” This reflects on Tris and Fours personalities as we can comprehend that they are apprehensive even when there is only a two year gap. We are given an insight by Roth in how the characters develop their relationship despite their predicament. Therefore readers would naturally presume Four and Tris’s characters would never be comfortable with an eight year difference due to their gripping personalities shown in the book. On the other hand, regardless the movie producers alter Fours age making him twenty four, “The film will depict Tobias Eaton as an older instructor by the age of 24.” This distinctly goes back on the characters that have been delineated and emphasised by Roth.
