Veterans are incredibly honored worldwide because they protect our freedom, provide a way for us to learn about our history and the world we live in, and risk their lives for strangers. We should take the time to honor them. And I don’t just mean twice a year on Veterans Day and Memorial Day. One of the most well-known symbols of veterans' memory and honor is The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia. One of the most prestigious events at this Tomb is the wreath-laying ceremony. These have been attended by presidents, politicians, and many others. Every year on this East Coast trip, I know that you choose 4 students to participate in this highly prestigious event. My grandfather was a veteran of the Vietnam War. As a child, my grandfather being a veteran meant that we could get a discount when we went to the zoo or I would make a card once a year for Veteran’s Day in class. Now, that means so much more. My grandfather and so many others like him have the bravery and courage to fight for our country. If he hadn't made it back, it would have been so incredibly important to those who were waiting patiently for him to return, including my Dad, that they could have a place to honor him. This is what The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier represents to me. All of the people who never made it back, have that sacred space to be honored. By participating in the wreath-laying ceremony, I will not only be making my grandfather proud, but I will have the chance to formally pay my respects to the sacrifices veterans have made for our country. The second reason why I think I should be chosen for the wreath-laying ceremony is that it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me.
