"[R]espect for others guides our manners."(Laurence Sterne). What Laurence Sterne is saying is that every relationship is built on respect whether it be familial, romantic, professional, or platonic. If some sense of mutual respect is not established then the relationship will only provide mutual discomfort and uneasiness. Anytime one person thinks that they are better or worse than the other person it causes their relationship to become damaged and unhealthy. This can cause their connection to each other to diminish therefore causing a lack of understanding. This leads to an endless cycle of the relationship weakening because of the lack of understanding between the two people which then causes the relationship to weaken again and so on. …show more content…
The Victorian Era was a time of peace which allowed the people of Britain to become more romantic in everything they did including social roles and standards. There was a socially acceptable way to do everything from conversing to even dressing. This correct way differed slightly in each social class but with more and more people discovering wealth due to the industrial boom in Europe and America the right and wrong way of communicating was blurred and people found it more and more difficult to understand each other. This was partially because of the fact that the ever growing middle class wasn't considered equal with previously wealthy people. Before the Victorian Era the social classes were very separate and distinct which caused people to only understand how to communicate within their social class but with new economic and social mobility people had to challenge themselves to think other people who were below them or above them in the class system were now equal to themselves. This is exactly what happens to Pip in Great Expectations when goes from someone common to being an up and coming gentleman.
