In war, there are no unwounded soldiers. This became apparent to me a few years ago when I decided to do a research project working with our Vietnam veterans and their families. This process was not like anything I was expecting. Throughout each interview I conducted both veterans and their families shedded a few tears as they shared stories of their time in the service. Although the Vietnam War was around 41 years ago seeing the reactions of our veterans as they told me their stories made me realize the clear distinction between reading about the battles in a textbook and hearing these account first hand. veterans have served in Afghanistan as a part of “Operation Enduring Freedom” (OEF) and Iraq “Operation Iraqi Freedom” (OIF). Every single of these brave men and women as well as their families have sacrificed so much for this country. Our soldiers are put into incredibly emotionally intense and strenuous situations, not knowing if they themselves or if one of their friends will come back home safe. Although, a majority of those who served in OEF and OIF do not return home with a behavioral disorder nor have they experienced from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), these soldiers still face the challenge of integrating back into civilian life. The change from living in unfamiliar settings and being exposed to combat and then transitioning to being apart of civilian life can possibly contribute to future problems not only for the veterans but for their families as …show more content…
Such criteria for an alcohol abuse disorder include having no regard for the legal consequences associated with alcohol abuse, having impaired control over the substance and a craving for alcohol as it could indicate a future relapse. The social impairment caused by the abuse, risky use of the drug, tolerance and withdrawal from the substance are also criteria that needs to be met before diagnosing someone with a substance abuse disorder. Based off of the number of criteria the client may exhibit, specialts then will diagnose the client with either no substance abuse disorder, a mild or moderate disorder, or is the client meets six or more of the needed criteria they will then be diagnosed with a severe substance abuse
