During the time of the book, conservative values were held by most people living in the United States. These views are what led to the books mass banning when it was published. The 1950s were a time of change, many people started to move to suburbs, Communism was a big fear, and the economy was growing faster than ever. These were caused because of the rise of Conservatism. Many conservatives don't like books that have vulgar language and sexual themes, and both of these are frequent in this book.
