Lover of the Land: Wang Lung In Pearl Buck´s historical fiction, The Good Earth, Wang Lung, the protagonist, wants to succeed and do all he can for his wonderful family. Lung is a diligent father that learns to accept women for who they are. Wang Lung values his land and has a change of heart when O-lan has a daughter. As the story goes on Lung starts to gain acceptance of women. O-lan, his wife, births her very own child. She has a baby named Poor Fool. She opens Wang Lung's eyes in a way his family never would have thought. In The Good Earth , it explains Wang Lung´s emotion toward his daughter: ¨And they all looked at the child and suddenly Wang Lung, through all this time had no wept at all, began to weep silently, the tears gathering in great knots of pain in his throat and rolling down his cheeks” (Buck 86). This quote explains how Wang Lung feels about his daughter and decides he will not sell the land because he wants his kids to grow up on the fields and experience what he has experienced. …show more content…
He knows what is important to him and to keep everything close. The Good Earth states, ¨But his roots were in his land and although he forgot it for many months together, when spring came each year he must go out on the land; and now although he could no longer hold a plow or do anything but see another drive the plow through the earth, still he must needs go and he went” (Buck 353). This quote explains Lung´s love for this land. Toward the end of the story, Wang Lung tells his sons to never leave or sell the field, because it meant so much to him. Wang Lung has an attachment to what the field has held him accountable
