On June 18, 1812, The United States of America declared war on Britain. The reason for this is because when Britain and France were at war, the US did not pick a side to defend. Later, Britain restricted American trade because Britain thought it was harmful to their war against France, thus gave the U.S. a reason to be mad. When the US was out at sea, British troops raided the ships, resulting in US troops being forced to served in the British Navy. This was called Impressment (History Net). The funny thing is that some British men came to the US to serve in the Navy, now they had been kidnapped and forced to serve back in there country. Along with fighting of the war, in the end the War of 1812 benefited our country. The overall big benefit from the war was a renewed self confidence and faith in the military to defend the homeland of the U.S. Included in the overall benefit, there were many small benefits such as settling the fear of foreign threats and allowed people to focus on the expansion of America, it also unified the citizens, making each individual stronger. This was very important because before the war America was very skeptical and nervous that the British army would destroy them. Then the U.S essentially stepped up the infantry game and fired back. Another example of benefitting independently was Francis Scott Key wrote a poem shortly after the war had ended, thus becoming the Star Spangled Banner. However no geographical changes or major policies were changed due to the military conflict. All causes of the war disappeared by the time the British and France war was over. Americans no longer feared the Indians, and the plans to create a buffer Indian state vanished. After the war with France, trade restrictions were forgotten and trading turned back to normal. America calls this a "Second War of Independence", and said they took the victory since The British could not win the Battle of New Orleans, leading the U.S. to believe that they didn't have the power to take over the country. I think this was a good call for the citizens of America, because it gave them even more confident that they won and there was no convincing them that they lost.
