Ethan Frome is a complex work of literature which ties in to many of the literary elements of the time. The theme is somewhat common for the time. While it does not include the same characters as other works of literature, the naturalist point of view is quite clear. Many works of the time period included Puritan views, which the author also ties into the story. In Ethan Frome, Wharton attempts to convey the theme of conflict between inner desire and reality through characters and symbolism.
One example of this theme is when Ethan is about to go after Mattie and as he is leaving, he realizes that it would be unethical to leave (Chapter VIII). This causes him to temporarily abandon his mission of seeing Mattie
