Of the different types of human trafficking in Russia, labor trafficking is dominant. In fact, Russia’s economic boom could have something to do with the fact that so many people are being trafficked into force labor. The Migration Research Center – a division of the Pew Research Center – “estimates that one million people in Russia are exposed to ‘exploitative’ labor conditions characteristic of trafficking cases” (“Russia”). Evidence for this includes poor living conditions, unpaid work and physical abuse. Migrant workers coming into Russia for better employment opportunities found that they were refused workers contracts – required under Russian law – which makes slave labor possible and cuts ties for workers to contacts officials or find resources to assist them (Migrant Construction Workers). Individuals being trafficked into forced labor were found to work in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, grocery stores, repair shops and textile and domestic services. …show more content…
About 40 percent of workers are said to be employed in the construction sector, which is highly unregulated (Narizhnaya). According to a study from the Human Rights Watch, a nonprofit, nongovernmental human rights organization, 146 migrant workers were interviewed who were working or had worked in the construction. It was found that in contrast to earlier waves of migrant workers coming to Russia, today’s workers are less killed, not able to speak as well in Russian and have little to no education. These factors lead to more workers being taken advantage of and becoming venerable to being trafficked for labor
