This book began with a teen boy, Clay Jensen, who finds a package with his name on it at his front porch. Clay starts to open the package and discovers cassette tapes. As he begins to listen to them, he notices the voice is Hannah Baker, one of his classmates and past crushes. The last time he saw and heard of Hannah, was when she committed suicide. Clay was confused by the tapes and didn’t understand why the tapes were sent to him.
While listening to the tapes, Clay realizes that Hannah talks about the rules of hearing the tapes and indicates that there are thirteen reasons why she ended her life. In addition, each tape talks about a different person and if you received the tapes meant that somewhere you are on the tapes. Clay begins to walk through town following the map given to him as he is listening to Hannah’s voice. Walking around the town gives him the full effect to what exactly happened in each tape. Only now after listening to the tapes, does Clay understands Hannah’s long pain in which will change how he views and see things
