In The Odyssey, a book by Homer, Odysseus the main character leaves his life to go to the Trojan war. He originally planned on being gone for only a few years but ends up being gone for 20. Throughout The Odyssey, faithfulness and loyalty is shown through the characters Penelope, Telemachus, and Athena. Penelope is faithful and loyal to Odysseus because she goes by what he told her before he left and only marries when Telemachus has a beard. Secondly, Penelope tears her weaving to delay picking a new husband “So everyday I wove on the great loom, but every night by torchlight I unwove it.” (Homer 906). Telemachus could have just let the men try to win his mother over but instead he tried to stop them by saying he’ll go find Odysseus. Which leaves me to my next piece of evidence, Telemachus believes his father is still alive when no one else does. Lastly, Telemachus stays to fight the suitors with Odysseus “Telemachus, true son of king Odysseus, belted his sword on, clapped hand to his spear, and with a clink and glitter of keen bronze stood by his chair in the forefront near his father.” (Homer 909) And finally, Athena is loyal and faithful to Odysseus by helping him solve his problems. Secondly, She helped Odysseus kill the suitors by disguising him “...she tipped her golden wand upon the man, making his cloak pure white and the knit tunic fresh around him. Lithe and young she made him…” (Homer 896). Lastly, Athena helped Telemachus on his journey to find Odysseus and gives him hope he’s still alive. In the end The Odyssey shows faithfulness and loyalty through Penelope who delayed picking a husband by unweaving her blanket, Telemachus who fought by his father’s side when killing the suitors, and Athena who helped Odysseus kill the suitors by disguising him.
