In a world where there is so much evil happening every day, we lose a grasp about what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Every day in the news you hear something terrible and tragic happening. If you can’t imagine it getting worse, it almost certainly will get worse. An ethical dilemma facing our society every day is the topic of abortion. The ending of a fetus’ life, in which the fetus has no say in what happens to it. This situation where the father of the fetus has fled, and the woman is starting a law career is a difficult situation. So how do we determine if this action to abort the fetus is right or wrong? Each individual situation is different and I don’t think there is a correct answer to this dilemma. There is no way that we can have criteria to evaluate the status of every action of abortion. We have discussed Utilitarianism, which tries to measure pleasure and pain to determine if an action is morally right or wrong. If an action creates more pleasure than pain, this is deemed morally permissible. Another theory is Kantianism, which attempts to use the criteria of universalization to determine the moral status of an argument.
