Poverty is when an individual is poor. Poverty is 'the standard of life enjoyed by an individual, measured principally by their level of income, and then incorporating a number of factors, including environmental, social, material, health and educative indicators' Child poverty is when a child is poor. Child poverty is widely perceived as a particularly problematic and disturbing facet of poverty, as the innocence of youth and helplessness of children to change their situation generates particular social concern (Politics, 2014). Poverty is linked with the undermining of a range of key human attributes for example health. The poor could be exposed to greater personal and environmental health risks, may be less well nourished, have less information and are less able to access health care. Absolute poverty is one measurement of poverty this is when an individual can not access basic needs such as water or shelter. Absolute poverty is a condition seen as severe deprivation of basic human needs for example not being able to access food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information. A individual is considered to live in absolute poverty when their body mass index is below 17, when individuals have to use rivers or steams to access water.
