Readings Assigned readings emphasize theory and application of coaching principles, Reading assignments will be provided and student discussion/input/reaction is required. You will be responsible for all reading assignments PRIOR TO the class listed in the syllabus.
GRADING Participation: (200 points) In class assignments will be given intermittently. They will correlate to the lecture topic that is being discussed on that particular day. Practice Observation Summary: 2-3 pages (150 points) You will be required to observe a team practice and provide a summary paper of your observations. This will be due on the last day of class, March 12th. Guidelines: 1) You may observe college, junior and senior high school, or youth league. No intramural sports, please. 2) The practice observed must be at least one-hour in length. 3) Include details of when and where your observations occurred. 4) Please include observations of: a) how well practice is planned in terms of efficient use of time, pace, and productivity b) your perception of how well drills/workouts are introduced and how groups are divided up c) (IMPORTANT) how do the coaches interact with the athletes? How is feedback given…verbally? Through physical demonstration? Is the feedback generally positive or negative? If negative, can you identify the event(s) that precipitated the negative reaction from the coaching staff? D) any other observations you care to make. In-Class Presentation: (100 points) Each student will be asked to present to the class a 5-7 minute presentation on a topic relating to coaching.
