Each nurse has their own definition of their philosophy of nursing in which they incorporate into their daily practice. Per, The Free Dictionary (2011), the definition of philosophy that best describes the field of nursing is, “An underlying theory or set of ideas relating to a particular field or activity or to life as a whole.” My philosophy of nursing is as follows; I believe every patient is an individual and their care should reflect their individual needs. As a professional nurse, I will treat each patient with compassion and respect. I will be accountable for my own knowledge, skills, and actions, while practicing with integrity and professionalism. This paper will discuss how I developed my personal nursing philosophy.

I have chosen this statement because it incorporates the attributes that I feel a great nurse should have, and they are attributes I bring to my patients every day I go to work. Being a nurse is more than passing medication and inserting IV’s. Nursing is about helping the patient heal, educating them about their diagnosis, how to live a healthy life, and keeping them as comfortable as possible. Most importantly our patients deserve respect and compassion. I try to live by the golden rule, treat others as you would expect to be treated. I feel the definition I chose is strong because it is patient centered. If it wasn’t for the patient, I wouldn’t have a career.
