As the film progressed, it touched upon a lot of different topics. The first major one was flashbacks, as the Motel room that they stayed at had significance towards Alice. Even though the director showed little flashbacks here and there, it was just the build up to the major flashback of Alice with a gun on her chest as she is pregnant. This was a powerful message for the film’s narrative because it confirmed to the viewer that Alice did not want to be in this situation. This goes into another important technique that the director had on its viewers with magic realism. As one of the children enters the bathroom for the first time, he noticed a “Do Not Drink” sign on the mirror. At first, it was kind of confusing, but as the film progressed you found out this water had power. By having that magic realism, the water from the sink almost seemed like a wishing fountain. It was important towards the film because all of the sudden, the water was the most powerful thing in the entire film. Magic realism again occurred when one of the children wished for his brother to have no hands or a mouth. Even though he deserved it, as he treated his younger brother poorly, it was a good use of magic realism
