The 2005 film, Water, written and directed by Deepa Mehta, focuses on the lives of widows in the Varanasi ashram, India. The film in set in 1938 India, while the British still colonized the country. I chose to view and write about this particular film because as a woman I felt like I could relate to the storyline and experiences of the various characters. Cultural taboos pertaining to widows that exist in India, the misogynistic nature of Indian society, and the ostracism that certain brackets of society that I viewed in this film are pertinent to the expansion of my knowledge and understanding of Indian culture. Before this film, I knew many taboos existed in India (as they have in
