William Golding lived a life that very much influenced his most popular novel, Lord of the Flies. He was born on September 19, 1911, and died on June 19, 1993, at the age of eighty-one. He lived through both World Wars and was exposed to the women’s suffrage movement in Britain. Similar to the characters in the book, he was born in England.
Golding grew up in Britain with his mother, Mildred, a suffragette, and his father, Alex, a schoolmaster. In his youth, he attended Marlborough Grammar School, where his father worked.
