So what is food first of all? Food is something that gives us energy and nutrients; it provides us with ways to complete bodily functions and maintain cellular structures. If our body doesn’t meet its nutrient needs, the body’s function will fail resulting in illness or death. That means that nutrients are essential for our body in order to survive and those essentials are, vitamins, lipids, glucose, salt, protein, starch, etc.
We use calories to measure the amount of energy in food. The amount of calories are measured by the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water to 1°C. There are 5 groups of macronutrients that provide different amount of calories. The two macronutrients …show more content…
We predicted in the beginning that it would test positive for protein, starch, salt , lipids, glucose, and vitamin C. My partner and I thought it would test positive for protein because egg is a protein, and that it would test positive for salt because they use it for flavoring. We also thought that there would be starch because bread is a carb, and that it would test positive for lipids because bacon has a lot of fat. We thought that it would test positive for glucose because there is a lot of sugar in the muffin to taste good, and that there would be vitamin C because it says so on the McDonald’s website. So what we did to test if the Egg McMuffin contained the organic and inorganic compound was add a reagent to the blended Egg McMuffin substance and then if it turned into a certain color after following certain steps, then it was positive for that nutrient. For protein, we had to add 10 drops of Biuret reagent and if it turned a violet color then it was positive. Our ending color was similar to mustard so that means there was no protein. Then for salt, we added 5 drops of AgNO3 to the Egg McMuffin and it turned into a cloudy white color, which is what it was supposed to look like if it was positive. Also for starch, we added 3 drops of iodine solution to the blended substance and it turned into a lighter yellow, meaning that the substance was negative for starch since it
