Critical race theory (CRT) started as an academic concept that originated in the late 20th century; it stemmed from critical legal studies with its main objective on critiquing the legal systems on its inherent political biases. Critical race theory shifted its focus toward addressing institutional racism that is embedded throughout society and laws.
