Coulthard made the conclusion that the characters in Oates's story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” are real-life people. He says that Arnold Friend is compared to Charles Schmid and Connie to the murder of Alleen Rowe and that Oates made it this way so that the story is more literary. Although Coulthard states this, he also says there are facts that don't add up: for example, Alleen Rowe was an only child with a divorced mother and knew her three murderers while Connie was the youngest of four and her two murderers were strangers. …show more content…
Also says that the way that Oates writes, making it seem as if Connie was in a dream, makes the reader question if it was or wasn’t because unlike other stories Connie doesn't wake up. This piece of writing fits into a larger discussion of the story because unlike many of the journals provided, this journal gives facts that contradict what other authors say about the story.
