In this essay I'm going to be talking about white tail deer and how they thrive in nature throughout the Midwest and spread across America. I decided to choose this topic because my favorite hobby is deer hunting. Outside of school, I spend about fifty percent of my time working on things to make my deer habitat stronger and to make the deer’s lives easier. After all of the preparation I get into my tree stand that sits over top of the animals habitat to hunt a trophy buck. Choosing this topic really interested me because I feel this assignment will help me research deer more and get a better understanding of how they think and react to things in the wild. Some things I hope to uncover in this research essay is how deer use their senses to smell people that are almost 200 yards away. I would also like to uncover how female deer take care of their fawns when they are new born. I also want to learn how deer learn to adapt to warmer and colder conditions and what they do differently. My last thing I would like to uncover is why deer have antlers, what are they used for? As I did some research I found out how bucks shed their antlers and grow them back to normal size. According to Antler Development “The male deer are the only deer that grow antlers; the only way a female deer can grow antlers is if they experience an issue with hormone testosterone levels which is very rare. White-tailed deer’s antlers grow bigger because of their age. To grow a big healthy rack they need access to quality nutrition and genetics” (Peirce 4). From this article, I uncovered that deer don't naturally grow massive racks randomly. This article showed the deer actually need good, high quality nutrition to have these racks because it takes a lot of nutrients and energy to have them. The next
