During the Salem Witch Trials, more than 200 women were accused of witchcraft, and out of those 200 women, 20 were executed. In the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, the Salem Witch Trials are taking place. Abigail Williams is the main character accusing many women of witchcraft. Countless people don’t like Abigail; therefore, she accuses a lot of innocent women of the crime out of spite. As a result of Abigail’s actions, unresolved conflicts between others can have tragic results. Abigail is being ornery because she is obsessed with John Proctor, she has no filter, and Abigail Williams is a very selfish young girl.

One night, Abigail and Betty are caught dancing in the woods and Abigail decides to blame the whole act on Tituba the servant. The girls were dancing around and drinking blood all for fun, and they were drinking potions to hurt others. Abigail admits to Hale about what happened in the woods, but exaggerates and blames the whole scenario on Tituba by saying, “ She made me do it! She made Betty do it… She comes to me every night to make me drink blood” (Miller 1260). After Tituba claimed that she was with the devil, Abigail decides to say that Tituba forces the devil upon her, and now she is stuck with it. Abigail made this lie up because she knew that the adults would believe her. During the Puritan times, children were thought to be pure, so all of the town’s people do not think that Abigail is lying about her accusations. Abigail knows about this and claims that she has seen the devils book and all of the names signed while talking to everyone in Betty’s room, Abigail realizes the power that she will have and decides to tell Reverend Hale by stating, “ I wrote in his book… I saw Sarah Good with the devil! I saw Goody Osborn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil” (Miller 1262).
