Johnny mainly exhibits fear. When Ponyboy describes him, Pony described the way Johnny’s eyes looked. “He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes and that beating he got from the Socs didn’t help matters,” This quote from Ponyboy about Johnny’s eyes described the fear Johnny had. Johnny’s fear was shown when Two-bit scared them at the drive-in theater where they were sitting with Cherry and Marcia, “Then I looked at Johnny. His eyes were shut and he was as white as a ghost. After Johnny killed Bob, and about five days after arriving at the church, something started a fire. Johnny shows drive by running in after Ponyboy. “I looked around, startled, I hadn’t realized Johnny had been right behind me all the way,” Johnny didn’t have to run in, but he did. He also shows drive by facing everything that happened to him and not giving up. He could've given up on life but he didn’t, he continued on. That is how Johnny showed his drive, his will.
The last thing Johnny shows is to care. He showed it when comforting Ponyboy after him and Darry had had a fight. “Easy, Ponyboy,” he said softly, “We’ll be okay.” Johnny comforted Ponyboy, he knew that just telling him to stop would probably just make Pony bottle his feelings up a bit. He shows his care also when the fire happened in the church. I mean, he could’ve just left the kids in there and stayed outside, letting Ponyboy go in by himself. But, he didn’t. He ran in after Pony. This is how Johnny shows the care he has.
Johnny showed all of these traits all the way up to his end. They show what type of person he was. He wasn’t just a side character, he was Johnny Cade, a friend to Ponyboy, he was the “pet” of all of the Greasers. He wasn’t a nobody. Johnny Cade was a person with fear, drive, and he showed fear. That was who he
