In the beginning of the book, Okonkwo is a dominant, well respected person unlike his deceased father who owed many debts to the tribe. The Igbos elements of culture have been the same for many years now. Okonkwo is respected with the original Igbo elements of culture. In Achebe's words “Okonkwo was well know throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on personal achievements”(Achebe 3). Okonkwo was not only well known but respected as well because of his great achievements. He was also known for his many yams and his wealth in farming. While Okonkwo was gone the european missionaries had come to Umuofia and built a church converting clan members to christianity. As religion changed Okonkwo lost respect from other clan members. The dialogue between Nwoye and Obierika show how Okowondo had lost respect from not only a clan member but his son, “‘I am one of them,’ replied Nwoye. ‘How is your father?’ Obierika asked, not knowing what else to say. ‘I don’t know. He is not my father,’ said Nwoye, unhappily”(Achebe 144). Although Okonkwo did not treat Nwoye well, changing his religion and going against his father figure is very disrespectful.
