Her third child, Peter, was illicitly sold to an enslaver in Alabama at the young age of five. Truth, without a penny or any legal exposure whatsoever, embarked on the several month long journey to restore custody of her child. She astounded the public with her monumental feat and thereby held the title as the first black woman to lead a legal victory. Moreover, Sojourner Truth’s actions manifested that justice has no preferred race. She was famously quoted, “I feel safe in the midst of my enemies; for the truth is powerful and will prevail.” She spoke of fortitude in a time of uncertainty, emboldening many despondent individuals.
