Tom Robinson in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a poor black man who is framed for raping a white teenage girl, and is put on trial for it in a very racist town where he is basically doomed from the start. He is an innocent and caring person. This is shown with his relationship with Mayella Ewell, where he feels bad for her and just wants to help her with her chores. Mr. Underwood “likened Tom’s death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children” (323) showing his well meaning intentions and innocence, while the people in Maycomb are so sure he had raped Mayella. Tom Robinson represents the theme of people that are mocking birds. Tom doesn’t do anything wrong and genuinely wanted to help Mayella out when she was struggling.
