The Civil War was a very harmful series of wars that led different parties of the government to divide. Both sides of the parties had to let African American slaves fight at the end even though they were very hesitant. African Americans fought in the war for their freedom. If they didn't fight in the war, then America wouldn't be the way that it is now. Fredrick Douglass was a very important person during the Civil War. Fredrick Douglass was an African American man that had to fight for the right that we now have today. He once stated that "to imagine that we shall ever be eradicated is absurd and ridiculous - but never extinguished 1858." He also said that "once let the black man get upon his person the brass letters, U.S., - and there is no power on earth which can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship in the U.S." These quotes mean that if an African American man has the right to risk their life and fight in the war, then they should have the right to call themselves citizens of the United States. …show more content…
How did they get there? African Americans were able to fight in the war even though the slave owners from the sought and even the northerners were hesitant. The Southerners had to use the slaves because their army was getting very small. The Northerners had the same situation but their army wasn't as small as the southerners. The African Americans were able to fight because of the Emancipation Proclamation which says that "such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed services of the United States..."
