people came from Africa to the North Colony of Jamestown. Slaves came to America to
work on the production of tobacco crops and then later they started to work on cotton.
They did this to make money. But they weren’t treated the right way by the whites.
First, slavery began in 1619 when about 19 slaves from Africa came to Jamestown.
In 1619, the Dutch introduced the first captured Africans to America, planting the seeds
of a slavery system that evolved into a nightmare of cruelty and abuse that would
ultimately divide the nation. Slavery started in the colonies because the need of the
colonists cheap labor to grow the economy.
