Why Do Honor Codes Matter

It has become common today to dismiss the idea that honor codes matter. In discussions of this controversial issue, students argue that honor codes do not make a difference and are not necessary. On the other hand, others contend that the utilization of the honor code reinstates the necessity of honesty. Ultimately, the honor code should be implemented in Lopez High School, because honor codes enhance the scholastic environment, establish trust and integrity, and eliminate bad habits. When an honor code is implemented, students feel a sense of obligation not to cheat because of their ethics. By pledging their honor, students are reminded of their “moral values” and “responsibility to perform honestly in [their] school environment” (Vangelli).
