Being a mature young adult, I was able to understand and handle all of the material in this book including the things that some people view as the reason to ban this novel. The main argument against Huck Finn is that there is a constant use of the “n” word and that it promotes racism. After reading the book, I did not feel the urge to dress like a Ku Klux Klan member, and unless my fellow piers did not invite me to their secret meetings, I doubt they felt that urge either. In the article, there was a valid opinion that could defiantly help ease the people who disagree with the book being taught because of the “n” word. “A serious comprehensive discussion of the term by an intelligent teacher certainly would have benefited my eighth-grade class and would have spared us…all some grief” (Morrison). High school is the time of a person’s life when they are starting to grow up and think for themselves. These students are all young adults and should definitely be capable of having a conversation like this where a teacher talks about and educates them about the “n” word. I could understand why people may not want younger kids to be taught this book, but if people can vote for president in high school, they can handle reading a book with this type of subject
