Why Is Hazing Wrong

Anytime I have spoken or talked to anyone about fraternities, I have been asked about the ongoing problem of hazing. Hazing is the practice of rituals and other activities that consist of harassment, abuse, or humiliation used to initiate someone into a group. There has been incidents of hazing in the military, gangs, and sports teams, but as of lately it is most commonly practiced in fraternities. Those who have no involvement in this culture tend to not understand the severity of hazing and think it is exaggerated at times. This may happen because the only knowledge they have on this topic is from movies and articles. The reasoning behind this is universities can’t assume that a fraternity is hazing. Some sort of evidence is required before universities can take action and fraternities take advantage of that. They keep everything very discrete and explain the importance of keeping it a secret to the pledges. Active members constantly say “we had to go through this too” and that comforts pledges because it makes them think everything will be alright. The concept of “if he can do it I can do it”, causing pledges to stick it out and not say anything when the going gets tough. With that being said, the problem is only identified when a fraternity gets caught and it only effects that frat. All the other fraternities that are doing the same thing can continue to behave like savages. It almost feels like universities are letting it happen because they know that the majority of frats haze, but don’t approach the problem until there is evidence. We can’t keep waiting for evidence and only punish the fraternities that get caught because it doesn’t slow down the problem is any way. Sure you can kick a frat that’s been caught off campus, but it doesn’t solve anything. Lives will continue to be taken and students will still get harassed or humiliated until a new approach to stopping the behavior is
